Get Started With Cosy Cantilever Die Set by Tonic Studios

April 17, 2020

Hello everyone, I had the chance to be amongst the first papercraft artist in trying Tonic Studios Designer's Choice -April 2020.

This is a 19 pieces die set, designed to create a Cantilever Box.

Today I'm sharing pictures, a video and a step by step to show you how to make this project.

Explore Designer Choice- April 2020

  • So with only 3 dies in the set, you will be able to build the box.
  • The other 16 dies are decorative dies.
  • You will get 2 different intricate die designs to create decorative panels for the box.
For the intricate detail, I used the dies with a more linear design. There are another dies in the set with tiny butterflies and swirls.

I decided to use a combination of pearlescent, satin mirror and metallic cardstock.

This is not an ideal choice for this kind of project because folding and gluing this type of materials take longer than when using textured or smooth colored cardstock.

As I love the look and feel of these papers,  I was willing to spend extra time and care on this project.

To decorate this box, I used the three smallest flowers from Susan Garden's Pom Pom Dahlia die set.

I also used silver pearls and to make it nor substantial, I also added a silver box base and legs.

I added a cluster of die-cut flowers to the front of the box while I leave the back of the box as it is.

You can see the back of this box in the picture below.

This is how the box looks unfolded...

Here is a picture from above.

Step by Step

Step 1

Die-cut.  Affix decorative panels and assemble the box.

Step 2

Glue the top flaps of the box.

  • You will need 4  boxes to make a single cantilever box.
  • Three boxes for the body of the box and one of them will be used to create the lid.

One Step at the Time

  • You will need to do a small alteration to the box that will create the lid (I explain below).
  • You will need brads to assemble this box.
  • To easily attach the brads you will need to assemble the box from the bottom to the top.
  • Make sure to add all the struts you need to each box before adding the next unit over.

 Assembling the Box

Step 3

Affix the larger strut in the first hole near the front of the box and the smaller strut in the second whole ( or the whole in the middle).
  • Do the exact same process on both sides of the unit.
  • Next, align the struts in diagonal with the wholes in the next unit.
  • The small strut should be connected with the third whole in the next unit ( the one in the opposite side to the box front) and the larger one should go attached to the hole in the middle.

 Step 4

Add another small strut to the second box.

In the first picture below you can see the position of the struts in relation to the front of the box.

Once you have done this on both sides of the unit,  you can add the 3rd stackable unit.

Step 5

At this stage is easy to identify where you have to add the brads. Attach brads where the struts intercept with a hole in the next box.

 Your 3-story box is done!

Now let's attach the box lid

Step 6

To make the lid you will need to cut the flap in the back and half of the flaps in the sides ( this simple alteration will allow the lid to move).

Then glue the corners of the top flaps of the box.

  • You could also cut all the top flaps of each unit ( box)  if this makes it easier. Just make sure the side panels of your box are well adhered.
  • You could also add the decorative panels after assembling the box but it is a lot easier to do it when the paper is flat (before assembling).

Step 7

Affix an extra strut to the 3rd stackable unit using a brad.

Step 8

Place the strut in diagonal.

Attach it with a brad to the hole in the middle of the lid side panel.

You are done!

This box measures: 2 -3/4" x 2-3/4" and it is 4" tall.

You can glue 2 boxes together for a larger Cantilever box, use any of your favorite paper and embellish as you wish.

Box Base

I added a silver box as a base for this box.

The box assembled measures 5-1/2" x 2 -3/4"x  3/4"

This is a basic box. Harder to explain than to make. Below a picture of the template in the video above.

  • The paper to make the base box measures 7-1/5" x 7-1/2" inches
  • score one side at 2-3/4",  3-1/2", 6-1/4",  7"
  • Turn around and score at 1/4", 1" from both ends
  • Trim the box flaps
  • Assemble

Phew! That's all for today.

Thank you very much for stopping by!

Sending Hugs and happy crafting.
